आज के ही दिन  2 अप्रैल, 2011 को भारत ने 28 साल बाद अपनी दूसरी आईसीसी विश्व कप ट्रॉफी जीती थी. प्रदर्शन करने के दबाव को महसूस करने के बाद, भारत के तत्कालीन कप्तान महेंद्र सिंह धोनी ने खुद को बल्लेबाजी क्रम में आगे बढ़ाया और सलामी बल्लेबाज़ गौतम गंभीर के साथ एक ठोस साझेदारी की, जिन्होंने 97 रनों की महत्वपूर्ण पारी खेली, जिसमें उनकी नाबाद 91 रन की नाबाद पारी भारत को जीत की ओर ले गई. भारत ने चार विकेट खोकर 275 रन के लक्ष्य को हासिल किया. इससे पहले श्रीलंका ने महेला जयवर्धने के 103 रन की मदद से 274 का चुनौतीपूर्ण स्कोर खड़ा किया था.
