Breast Tax in Travancore, Kerala: स्कूपव्हूप वेबसाइट की रिपोर्ट के अनुसार केरल के त्रावणकोर (Travancore, Kerala) में, 19वीं सदी के दौरान निचली जाति की महिलाओं को अपने स्तन ढकने के लिए टैक्स (Breast tax) देना पड़ता था. इस कर का नाम मलयालम में था मुलक्करम यानी की स्तन कर था. वहां के राजा ने महिलाओं के लिए आवश्यक कर दिया था कि वो बिना स्तन ढके ही रहें.

इस स्तन कर को लेकर न जाने कितनी किंवदंतियां हैं, जो समय के साथ पूर्वाग्रहों और श्रुति परंपरा में पककर कहानियों में ढलती गईं. हालांकि औपचारिक इतिहास में इसे लेकर परस्पर विरोधी विचार मिलते हैं.

द टेलिग्राफ समेत कुछ वेबसाइट्स तो ये भी दावा हैं कि उस वक्त के पुरुष और महिलाएं पहले से ही उपरी अंगों को नहीं ढकते थे. ऐसे में इस टैक्स से जुड़े कई दावों की सत्यता की जांच नहीं हो सकती है, और Latestly हिन्दी इन दावों के सही होने की पुष्टि नहीं करता है.
